The Video
Is there a link between irritable bowel syndrome and the Type A personalities who create stress in their lives through being perfectionists, hard workers and overachievers? I discuss that in this video.

Is there are connection between IBS and the Type A personality?
Welcome to this video. Today, I want to talk a little bit about a connection between Irritable Bowel Syndrome and the Type A personality. It’s not that I have studied Type A personalities, but I know that I am one myself, and I have IBS. I’ve talked over a long period to many people with IBS, and I can usually ascertain whether they’re Type A personality or not. It does seem to be that an inordinate number of those I talk to are that type.
The Type A personality is a very organized person. We are people who like to do things well, and we’re also a type of personality that wants to be approved of and to have acknowledgement for what we do as well. We do it really because we have to – to be organized and to work really, really hard and to overachieve. We’re overachievers. We always put a 110% into everything we do, whether it’s working for someone else, working for ourselves, bringing up our children, being a wife, being a daughter. Whatever it is, we try to our best. Actually, it’s not that we try to. It’s that we can’t help but do that. It is who we are.
That type of personality is naturally a little bit more stressed out than the next person because of that need. And stress, as we know, is an irritant of Irritable Bowel Syndrome. It is also something that can trigger Irritable Bowel Syndrome if there is a period of stress or trauma in our lives. To me, there seems to be a natural connection. We are a stressed-out type of personality – always on the go, always working, we don’t know how to relax, and Irritable Bowel Syndrome can be caused by stress. This is just my theory and what I’ve observed through all these conversations with people with IBS and my own experience, of course. I’m not making any scientific pronouncement here but it is a possibility.
They Type A personality is often somebody who might not even recognize that they’re stressed out. They think that they’re coping brilliantly, but they’re like the ducks swimming on water. On the surface, it’s all smooth, nothing much is happening but they’re progressing, and underneath, those little feet are going furiously to try and keep it all together. That is something that I think we do constantly throughout our lives as Types As but we don’t always recognize it. So I’ve often asked some of these people, “Do you think you’re stressed?” And they say, “No, I don’t think so.” You ask a few more questions, and wow, yes. They are struggling to keep it all together and they have a very strong need to keep it all together. Anyway, I said this is not a scientific pronouncement but something that you might find interesting if you recognize yourself in this personality and you have IBS.
Thank you for listening and goodbye.
Stuffed Vegetables
This is another old-fashioned recipe from my green recipe book. Who serves stuffed vegetables these days? Me! We used to do these all the time but then they went out of fashion. That doesn't mean no one ever did them again but they did fall out of favour. They sure tasted good and took me back to times past. Good times, living in Italy.

You’re right that one doesn’t see too many stuffed veggie recipes nowadays. Too bad! They’re good. Like these, for example. 🙂 Very nice — thanks.

I guess we can just stuff our own vegetables and not worry about fashions. LOL.

I don’t know why these went out of style…they still look delicious. Plus such a terrific presentation!
Suzanne Perazzini says
Who know what makes fashions in food? Now it’s all about lots of small, delicately presented bits and pieces on a plate with a multitude of flavours. I think it’s time to stuff things again!

I remember in the 70’s we used to eat a lot of stuffed vegetables – it was all the rage along with devilled eggs – another stuffed thingy. I haven’t had stuffed vegetables for ages but a few weeks ago I stuffed capsicums and we had the most wonderful family meal xx
Suzanne Perazzini says
Ha! Yes, devilled eggs were something my mother-in-law was famous for. We stuffed anything we could find back then. LOL.

I`m new to your blog and the FODMAPS diet. Been really trying to stick to it and I noticed in this recipe it has garlic and cheese (parmesan), aren`t those no no`s?
Suzanne Perazzini says
KIm, I hope the diet helps you as much as it has helped me. The garlic is not the actual bulb but garlic-infused oil and that is allowed because the fructans (Fodmaps) in garlic don’t dissolve in oil so we get the flavour without the bad guys. Also Parmesan is fine, like any mature cheese, because it is almost all fat and the lactose amount is tiny – not enough to hurt us.
Good luck with the diet.
