Recently I have been having trouble with my neck – too many hours in front of a computer with no solution in sight. One has to earn a crust. My physiotherapist has been stern with me and clear about the future if I don’t take stock now of my daily activities. I work 8 hours a day, like many people, then I go home and blog and do marketing for my novels – still in front of a computer. I have a half hour for lunch so I have to split that time into three 10 minute blocks. For two of them, I have to leave the office and go for a walk and the last is for eating lunch. In between, I have to do stretching exercises. All of this is for the rest of my life. Great fun!
When it gets really bad and a headache sets in, I have found that a few things help – heat, stretching, massage and wine. And what does one need with wine? Nibbles. So, the other day I took the pancake recipe I used for dinner a little while ago here and made tiny pancakes then topped them with smoked salmon, a dollop of sour cream and a little dill. The wine relaxed my sore, tight neck muscles and the nibbles made life bearable again. Cooking if so often a way back to sanity.

Oh no – what a shame you are still suffering with pain. You seem to put so much effort into leading a healthy lifestyle that I am sure you will be rewarded with a pain free life some time soon. I completely agree with you on the benefits of a glass (or two) (or more) of some good wine and yes of course some tasty food of which I’m sure there is plenty in your household.

Thanks so much for your sympathy, Angela. I am already seeing good results from working with my physiotherapist. I need a major lifestyle change to really sort myself out but that is easier said than done. As far as my digestive issues are concerned, I am miles better and eternally thankful that I have solved the riddle of my rebellious insides.

I tend to spend too much time in front of the computer, too. Not as much as you, though – that’s a lot! One of the things I like about cooking is you can take a basic recipe like a pancake recipe, and use it for other things. The possibilities are endless! Great looking dish – thanks.

You probably have a reasonably good life balance between movement and stillness. Better than mine anyway. I long for a big change but it’s difficult to work it out. We still have a son studying and living at home so that keeps our feet firmly on the ground.

Aren’t blins amazing? I like them so much.

They are so versatile – a different topping makes a completely different dish.

I’d love to have a medical condition that gave me the excuse to drink more wine! I’m sure we weren’t designed or built to spend so much time in front of a screen. It has opened vast opportunities for physios, chiros, osteopaths and acupuncturists! I do hope you can relax with your wine and these gorgeous snacks xx

Wine and nibbles sure help, Charlie. Actually I was just speaking to my physio today about the opportunities he has as the baby boomers move into their sixties with a heap of aging issues. Perhaps we should be encouraging our children to enter these professions.

Such tempting bites! I hope your pain subsides; I often have neck pain from the computer too and force myself to take stretching breaks!
Suzanne says
Thanks, Laura. I am already turning a corner. You had better work on those stretches and having breaks while you are young or you will have a terrible time later. The working world has changed so much in the last ten to twenty years. We have never been so sedentary and it is a real unknown how that is going to affect as we age.
