This is a summary in photos of our 7-day trip around Costa Rica. I will make a video later which will be much more comprehensive. Costa Rica is very different to Guatemala and the style of trip was more about the places than the people, while Guatemala was about the people and how they lived. We stayed in lovely places and had a great experience. Wherever we went the people were hospitable and kind. Much of the country reminds me of New Zealand with the focus on nature and the environment. We are now off to San Francisco for two days and then back home to New Zealand.
Oh and by the way, my gut has been very peaceful and I have avoided the numerous meals littered with onions. It has been tricky at times to get the message across even with my laminated card but somehow I got there. Let’s see if I manage as well in San Francisco.

I have been reading with interest about your travels Suzanne and appreciate you letting us into your world of travelling – I will be travelling to South Africa at the end of the year where the food is fantastic – not looking forward to curtailing my foodie mindset

Have a great time in South Africa. When I was there in 2002 I didn’t know about the low Fodmap diet and yet I had no problems. The food was very simple and down-to-earth and I think that was the key. It is a beautiful, wonderful yet sad country.

Hi Suzanne,
Looks like your journey is so beautiful. I visited Costa-Rica just for one day with a cruiseship and we visited a banana plantation and did acrobranche- springs between trees in a rainforest, was wonderful.
Enjoy San-Francisco, a very beautiful city.

Sounds like you had a fun day in Costa Rica. Cruising is a good way to get a taste of a country so you can decide if you want to go back and explore further.

I went to Costa Rica several years ago, way before I knew about the low FODMAP diet. Your pictures were a reminder of a wonderful place and an excellent trip. Unfortunately, I had many “issues’ there. Besides the wonderful memories of the place, I have some not-so wonderful memories of dashing to the toilet and even making an emergency visit in a wooded area. Well, you gotta do what you gotta do!

I can imagine you would have had a lot of problems because onion is everywhere. In one hotel, they had to make special meals for me because the included buffet dishes all had onion in them – every single one.

Looks like such a beautiful country Suzanne, what an experience! So glad to hear you are managing well with the diet. Hubby and I are visiting France and Spain in September/October, hope I can do as well with the rich food there!

Carole, it’s about being proactive with looking after your health despite what anyone else says or thinks.

How exciting for you to be traveling in Guatemala and Costa Rica, Suzanne. Your accommodations in Arenal and Monteverde look quite comfortable. Don’t you love the lovebird towels? David and I took a bus tour through Arenal. We took a boat from San Carlos, Nicaragua across the Rio San Juan into Costa Rica. We arrived at our hotel in La Fortuna after dark, and saw a clear outline of the Arenal volcano out the hallway window of the hotel. The next morning, the volcano was socked in and it started raining. Looks like you are enjoying great weather. I’m glad your stomach is happy!

We saw the tip of the mountain for exactly 3 minutes before the cloud came in again. It is very elusive.
