We humans are amazingly good at procrastination – it could be one of our greatest talents. Do you want to endure IBS symptoms all your life, to die with your belly in turmoil, never knowing a day of peace? If you do nothing, that is the surest thing on earth that will happen. There is no cure for IBS so waiting around for it to disappear is like waiting for the sun to burn out. It will happen but not in our lifetime. Don’t get me wrong, we all make excuses so that we don’t have to make a decision. How true is that and that’s where procrastination comes in and the excuses trip the light fantastic. Here are a few of the excuses I have heard for not getting the diet sorted: Wouldn’t it be wonderful if you didn’t have to contend with a troublesome tummy and your need to know the location of every toilet in the vicinity while you are this busy? Imagine if you could work, teach, deal with the kids, move house, go on holiday with a calm gut? I can’t begin to … [Read more...] about 3 Reasons for Putting off Doing the Low Fodmap Diet

6 Crucial Elements for a Successful Low Fodmap Diet for IBS
As you may know, a month ago, my 26-year-old son had a very serious motorbike accident and narrowly avoided becoming a quadriplegic. He now has a head full of metal plates, screws and bone grafts in an attempt to keep his skull attached to his spine. However, the story I didn't tell you was what happened immediately after the accident. He woke up in a ditch full of rocks in the middle of nowhere, took off his helmet and crawled out to the road verge. Warning: this is not a smart thing to do if you have come off your bike, but the angels were smiling on him that day - in more ways than one. Even though the vertebrae that attached his skull to his spine were shattered into a hundred pieces (the surgeon's words), the ligaments in his head and neck managed to do their job just long enough for the second miracle to happen. He staggered to his feet and pulled out his cell phone and tried to ring the emergency services but there was no signal. Two cars drove straight past but then the … [Read more...] about 6 Crucial Elements for a Successful Low Fodmap Diet for IBS

5 Foods Not to Consume for IBS
Having a list of good foods and bad foods does not necessarily spell success on the low Fodmap diet. Eliminating IBS symptoms requires a multi-pronged attack including finding other non-Fodmap related gut irritants. In this video, I tell you about 5 foods you should not consume if you want to stay symptom-free. Some of them may surprise you. Welcome to this video. Today, I want to talk to you about five things that you shouldn't consume if you've got IBS and are on the low Fodmap diet. The first thing is chewing gum. Apart from the fact that this is just a habit if you do chew gum, there is no goodness that comes from it whatsoever. It's mainly made of chemicals and often contains high Fodmap ingredients. But apart from that, the main problem is that when you chew gum, you actually gulp down air, maybe in small amounts, but that starts to accumulate in the gut. As you know, one of our problems is gas in the intestinal tract. So we don't want to introduce any more than … [Read more...] about 5 Foods Not to Consume for IBS
Bowel Movements
Bowel movements are often in our thoughts throughout the day. How jealous are we of those who go to the toilet once a day for a couple of minutes and it's done and dusted for the rest of the day! We can get somewhere near that on the low Fodmap diet, but most of us will never be quite like them. At the end of the day, we have IBS and though we can control it with diet and a well-balanced lifestyle, it's not going anywhere anytime soon. At least, not until they find a cure and that's not on the horizon. So, let's discuss our bowel movements. Watch my video to learn of a few things that are actually "normal" for us, as annoying as they are. You can find the Bristol Stool Chart HERE. Today, I'm going to talk about bowel movements. Not exactly a subject for dinner party conversation, but anyway, it's a very important conversation for those of us with irritable bowel syndrome. Our bowel movements fall into one of three categories. Either we have IBS, diarrhea, constipation, or … [Read more...] about Bowel Movements
